Autism is...

Many people always tell me sorry when they find out my son is autistic. I'm sorry? You are sorry for what? That you are confused about what you think autism is? People always go straight to the assumption that autism is a horrible thing to have in your family. It's not. Autism is a beautiful thing that you learn to accept. These are the things we have learned...

Autism is not going into public restrooms with automatic toilets and hand dryers.
Autism is lining up our toys and not getting them out of order.
Autism is a set schedule.
Autism is having the same thing for breakfast every day.
Autism is not switching blankets at night time.
Autism is knowing when to go home when things get overwhelming.
Autism is watching the same movie over and over.
Autism is obsessions with legos, dump trucks, and the weather.
Autism is random amazing hugs that make you melt.
Autism is learning about tornadoes.
Autism is learning about love.
Autism is knowing his boundaries.
Autism is consistency.
Autism is about acceptance.
Autism is learning patience.
Autism is awesome.
Autism is us.

I have had to deal with a few ignorant people so far on our journey that has thought autism was contagious. Being around my son isn't going to cause your children to get autism, but your ignorance is very infectious. I just wish people would see the beauty in each child because autism is different in each one. Quite honestly, most of us have a little bit in each of us! So when you find out a child of a friend has been diagnosed with autism, please don't tell them you are sorry or ask what superpower their child has since they have autism. If you stay friends, just remember its always a journey and don't get mad when they don't want to hang out as often as you'd wish to. They have a lot going on in their life and it is centered around the needs of their children.
